Top 10 Summer Essentials

Summer is almost here, so you know what that means: vacations and more time enjoying the great outdoors!  Whether you are spending time at the beach, lounging by the pool or attending a music festival al fresco, there are some must-have items that we recommend to make your summer vacation experience more enjoyable.

1. Swimwear
Trends vary from year to year, so it’s always a good idea to pick a suit you feel most comfortable wearing. Whether it’s a bikini or a one-piece, combined with a cover-up or a pair of boardshorts – whatever makes you feel most confident is always the way to go!  Feeling good is always in style. If you want to keep your swimwear in good shape, always hand wash them in cold water and hang them to dry.  Chlorine and sea salt are especially harsh on your suits, so always rinse them out as soon as you come back from the beach or pool!

2. Sandals
Sandals come in a variety of styles to complement your outfit and activity.  When it comes to popularity, flip-flops are on top.  They are the ideal footwear to protect your feet on the warm beach sand.  Slides, wedges and sandals with adjustable straps are some of the other popular styles.  No matter if you’re casually hanging out at the beach or going to a dressier party outside, sandals are the summer footwear of choice.

3. Sunscreen
While it should be used year-round, people are more aware of the need for sunscreen during the summer, since more time is spent outdoors during those months.  The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that everyone uses water-resistant sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher with broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays).  When outdoors, reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Don't forget to apply it to the tops of your feet, neck, ears and head. Also, protect your lips by applying a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

4. Hat
Do you have a hat preference?  If you’re playing a sport, like baseball, you probably favor a cap.  If you like to hang out on the beach, you may be a fan of wide-brimmed straw hats.  The bucket and boonie styles are a nice in-between because you get the wide brim, which offers sun protection, and the durability of a cap.

6. Sunglasses
Protect your eyes from the sun’s brightest rays with polarized sunglasses.  Polarized lenses give you clearer, more accurate vision and alleviate some eyestrain while protecting your eyes from the sun.

7. Sun Shirt
Sun Shirts can be a lifesaver when it comes to protecting your arms and torso from UV rays during long summer days in the sun.  A long-sleeve, sun shirt with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) number on the label is perfect for all outside activities.  You can also choose one with a hood for extra protection for your neck.
